Streep, Brosnan, Hanks hit London red carpet for Mamma Mia film premiere
LONDON - Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan walked a red carpet through a fake lemon grove for the London premiere of Mamma Mia Monday.
Hundreds of fans watched as the actors arrived for the premiere in Leicester Square, which was decorated with fake trees to look like the Greek island where the movie is set.
The film is based on the stage musical featuring songs by Swedish pop group Abba and tells the story of 18-year-old Sophie Sheridan, who tries to discover who her father is in time for her wedding day. The musical is still playing in central London.
In the film, Streep plays Sheridan's mother and Brosnan is one of the three possible fathers.
Members of Abba were also at the premiere, along with Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson, who produced the film. Hanks and Wilson also are credited with making "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" into a hit. The Oscar-nominated 2002 film was written by and starred Winnipeg's Nia Vardalos.
