The Dead Kennedys integrated rotatory politics with hard-core strong-armer euphony and, in the treat, became one of the defining hard-core bands. Often, they were more illustrious for their politics than their music, but that was part of their impingement. The Kennedys were more elysian by British punk rocker and the fiery, revolutionary-implied politics of the Sex Pistols than the artier tendencies of New York punk rocker rockers. Under the direction of spark advance vocalist Jello Biafra, the Dead Kennedys became the most political and -- to the eyes of many observers, including Christians and right politicians -- the most unsafe band in hardcore. By the mid-'80s, the ring had become ill-famed enough to open themselves up to a prosecution for obscenity (concerning a post horse inserted into their 1985 Frankenchrist record album), and the ensuing court battle sped the stripe toward a dissolution, merely they left behind a legacy that influenced numberless hood bands that followed.

The Dead Kennedys formed in 1978 in San Francisco when Biafra (vocals; born Eric Boucher) and bassist Klaus Flouride responded to a magazine ad placed by guitar player East Bay Ray. Drummer Ted (born Bruce Slesinger) joined soon afterward and the band played topically for the start deuce years of their career, from time to time venturing outside the Bay Area. Within a year, the band released their starting time self-governing single, "Calif. Über Alles," an attack on the then-current governor, Jerry Brown. It was followed shortly after by their second individual, "Holiday in Cambodia." In 1979, Biafra ran for mayor of San Francisco; he finished fourth part. By this meter, the band had become quite popular in both the American and British underground. Finally, in 1980, the ring released their debut record album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, on IRS Records. After its release, Ted left field the band; he was replaced by drummer Darren H. Peligro.

Following the release of Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, the Dead Kennedys formed their have independent phonograph record label, Alternative Tentacles, in 1981. The first release on the pronounce was the Kennedys' EP, In God We Trust. That same class, the single "Besides Drunk to Fuck" scraped the bottom of the inning of Britain's pop Top 40, despite organism banned from airplay. In 1982, the Kennedys released their arcsecond full-length album, Shaping Surgery Disasters. After its press release, the band took a reprieve, during which bandmembers -- almost notably Klaus Flouride -- performed with various english projects. During that time, Alternative Tentacles began to establish itself as a major forcefulness in the American tube.

The Dead Kennedys returned in 1985 with Frankenchrist, which was the track record that earned the stria its sterling ill fame. Included with the album was a post horse of the Swiss creative person H.R. Giger's Landscape #XX, a brassy illustration of penises and anuses. A year after the acquittance of the album, the Kennedys and Alternative Tentacles were prosecuted under revised Californian anti-obscenity pentateuch for distributing porno to minors because of the post-horse. For the next deuce age, the band was entangled in a biting legal struggle, during which Biafra emerged as one of the virtually enunciate advocates for discharge lecture and vocal opponents of the PMRC. In the summer of 1987, the showcase all over with a hung panel and was dismissed.

Although the Dead Kennedys emerged victorious from the court fight, they didn't stay on a band for much yearner. Just in front the pursuance began in 1986, the stria released Bedtime for Democracy, which sour kayoed to be their last prescribed album. After the case was settled, the Kennedys rip, cathartic the posthumous compiling Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death in 1987. Biafra embarked on a solo career, cathartic musical and spoken word recordings sporadically over the next yoke decades. Flouride returned to his fledgeling solo calling, releasing two albums in the former '80s and early '90s. The DVD arrange of Dmpo's On Broadway, the Dead Kennedys' June 1984 public presentation marking the closing of San Francisco's new wave field and night club, was released in May 2000.
